Port of Manaus
Manaus is the largest port in the state of Amazonas, and a center for commerce and tourism. Visitors arrive and leave by river boat to cruise down the Rio Negro, named for its dark waters, to join the Amazon either on their way upriver ultimately to Peru or down river past many ports to Belem.

Palafita housing
Despite the fast development, large part of the population still live in "romantic" conditions. |
The Amazon Theater
The Amazon Theater is a must for every visitor. Built from 1882 to 1895 with most material shipped from overseas it is the landmark of Manaus.
Totally renovated in 1995 it is host to the opera festival every year in May.

The Rio Negro Palace
The mansion was constructed in 1903 as the residence of a rubber baron from Germany, Waldemar Scholz.
Renovated in the 1980s, the splendid marble and native wood interior were refurbished. There is a coin collection and an art display worth seeing.
